Gothfia Revealed!
by Eleyda Negrón
After long research, this organization has come to light finally. What was once a myth is now a dark reality. The Gothfia - a belly dance organization whose only purpose is to unleash darkness among dancers and dominate the world is unleashed. It began in California, where Ariellah, Sashi and Tempest - also known as “The Gothmother” - were once together. Now, it has been confirmed that several months ago the Gothmother relocated to the East Coast to expand their Globe reach.
The influence of these ladies has no frontiers, and their plans for domination get stronger by the second. As a clear sign of their power, we expose several members of this organization. Members around the United States whose talent and darkness gave them a privileged rank in the Gothfia. We are sure that there are many others around the world spreading darkness, but right now our investigations lead us to these voracious dancers. Beware them! They will enchant you and trap you in their webs, and you will become one of them.
Aepril Schaile
Eleven years ago, Aepril started belly dancing in the Raks Sharqi style. She eventually developed her own style from her love for theater, myth, gothic music and art, and her studies and practice of shamanism, ritual and divination. The New England dancer earned her Master in Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Art from Goddard College in 2002, where belly dance was a part of her studies. Aepril directs the Exquisite Corpse Bellydance Project, which is a cyclical, temporary collaboration of dancers. The idea of this project is to get dancers to collaborate, who normally would be hard pressed to work with one another (due to distance, involvement in primary projects, etc.). She also has a band: Aepril Schaile and the Judgment, named for the Judgment trump card in the tarot. They released a CD last year called “The Furies' Prayer”. She also teaches classes and workshops in gothic and theatrical belly dance in New England and beyond.
Anaar
Anaar started belly dancing in her thirties, and was mesmerized by FatChanceBellyDance, which changed her whole viewpoint of belly dance. Anaar is a long time practicing witch in the Feri Tradition and brings to her performances a large body of dark lore and ritual. Her body of work focuses on sensual ecstasy and expressionistic storytelling. She walks between the worlds, dancing between technique and passion. She is working on her future presentations for Shadowdance on November 10th, and Gothla US: The Conjuring for early 2008 in Orange County, CA.
Asharah
From Washington DC, the resident instructor at Joy of Motion Dance Center started belly dancing in 2000. Her love for strong technique and mechanical movements got her a place on the first Gothic Belly dance DVD and her next project is an instructional DVD titled Modern Tribal Bellydance. It will focus on the technique for sharp, glitchy, and “tick-tock” movements and also how to gracefully integrate these types of robotic moves into a performance. It will be released in early 2008.
Belladona and Mavi: Romka
Located in Washington, DC these Tribal Fusion bellydancers have successful careers as soloists, as well as the Romka dancing duet. They both started dancing in 1997, fusioning Cabaret and American Tribal Style with other rhythms and sounds, and since then it has been non-stop. As Romka they will be participating in The Night of 1,000 Goddesses in New York, and Shadowdance on November 10, at the Oakland Metro, Oakland, CA. They will be also teaching at Tribal Fest 2008. As solo artists, Mavi is featured in the upcoming Gothic Bellydance:Revelations DVD, while Belladonna will be with her student troupe BellaTrix at the BellyHorror Show.
BellyCraft
BellyCraft was founded in 2004 by Alicia Sparaco, the director and choreographer, with Heather Chapin and Summer Rankin from South Florida. BellyCraft fusions Gothic Industrial with Tribal Fusion belly dance. On December 1st, Alicia will be giving the workshop “BellyCrafting the Dark Wave” where she will be teaching a two hour workshop on Gothic / Industrial Belly dance. BellyCraft will be performing as well.
ChoveXani
ChoveXani is a Gothic and Experimental Ethnic Dance group founded in 1993 in New York. Directed by Z. Asha, who created the term “Gothla”, ChoveXani is a fusion of Gothic Belly Dance, theatrical styling, East Indian and Ethnic dances. As they say in their website “Part priestesses, part rock stars, part brujas, part gothic chicks ... these talented women are always entertaining.” You can enjoy these delightful dancers at Romka's Belly Horror Show in Washington DC.
Hands of Kali
From Seattle, Washington, the troupe Hands of Kali - Kendra, Maureen, Christina, and Magi - has offered since 2003 a sassy eclectic combination of belly dancing, story telling and sword play (and Goddess knows what else). Even though they know Tribal Fusion, this group is actually cabaret-style based and they mix it with their Goth/Industrial energy. They are working on their first full-length dance video to the song "Kommoddities of the Fetish" by the Fog People and are featured in the documentary “Crazed: The Belly dance”.
Naimah
Her bellydance career began with cabaret, but the journey took her to a blend of American Tribal Style bellydance with classical Indian, hip hop, flamenco and a little bit of cabaret. She offers classes at the Community College of Baltimore County, and performed at Rakkasah West; and now the East coast will have the great pleasure to see her again, performing at Rakkasah East. In the meantime, she is looking forward to form a troupe focusing on Gothic and fantasy themes.
Obsidia
Obsidia started bellydance approximately four years ago and has a background in cabaret style. From Dallas/Fort Worth Texas she is probably the most recognized Gothic belly dancer in that state. She had a wonderful piece in Tribal Fest 2007 and is getting ready for her workshop at Tribal Alchemy on October 21st in Fort Worth, TX.
Serpentine
Portland's premiere theatrical fire fusion belly dance duet was formed in 2005 by Lucretia Renee Rathmann and Aradia Sunseri. This innovative duet explores the ancient art of storytelling through spectacle and ritual using eclectic visual and musical influences. Along with creating stylized costumes, stage props, and firedance equipment, Serpentine collaborates with various performers and musicians, always resulting in a unique experience. Sets are either improvisational, elaborately choreographed, or both. Each year, Serpentine coordinates East Meets West - a bellydance showcase featuring bellydancers of a darker nature. Serpentine's next appearance will be at Shadowdance.
Shakra
With their usual description as “Transfusion, Deviance, Evolution” the 2004 founded DC troupe transfuse belly dancing with different world dances, including African moves to deviate to a new unique style. While they are a consolidated East Coast group, they made a stompy debut on the West Coast at Tribal Fest 2007, bringing down the house and earning a spot as some of the future teachers for Tribal Fest 2008. They will be featured on the Gothic Belly Dance: Revelations DVD, and are working on their comprehensive workshop for Tribal Fest and a brand new performance piece.
Taletha
From Denver, Colorado, and now in Louisville, KY our “Move of the Month” writer Taletha joined the belly dancing community in 2003, but has been Goth since she was a teenager. Probably the only Gothic bellydancer in her area, Taletha combined her knowledge of Modern Egyptian style with her Gothic roots. When searching for a way to fusion her personal lifestyle to belly dance, Taletha avoided watching other DVDs to ensure that she developed a style of her own: a dark cabaret dancer. Taletha is currently working on Belly Spell as part of TL2 Productions and in conjunction with Restless Natives Productions. Restless Natives Productions is a recurring belly dance review open to many different styles of modern music from Goth and Industrial to Rock, and even Arabic Pop, trying to bring belly dance to the club scene and offer an alternative.
